paladin.gifHistory of the Paladin - Defender of Faith
Charlemagne, or Charles the Great, succeeded his father, Pepin, on the throne in the year 768. In the year 800, Charlemagne traveled to Rome with a numerous army to protect Pope Leo III. On Christmas day Charles entered the Church of St. Peter for Mass. When he approached the altar and stooped in the act of prayer, the Pope stepped forward and placed a crown of gold upon his head. Immediately the Roman people shouted, "Life and victory to Charles the August, crowned by God the great and pacific Emperor of the Romans." By this act was revived the Empire in the West, and, in theory, at least, the world was declared by the Church subject to one temporal head, as Christ had made it subject to one spiritual head. It was understood that the first duty of the new emperor was to be the protector of the Roman Church and of Christendom against the heathen. By his side in this endeavor were his illustrious knights called Peers or Paladins. They were residents of the palace and companions of the king. Their exploits as defenders of the faith are legendary and their names are engraved in the history of the Church.

ANTHEM

Arise, Oh Paladins!
Arise, arise, Oh Paladins! The Kingdom does await! For Christ Our King descends his throne with power and glory great. And with the sword of charity, He knights us, prince or fair lady. And, sends us forth his light to bear, the world illuminate. From Pinecrest's peaceful glade we ride, well armed with truth and love. Our armor forged from human toil with gleam from grace above. Our charge to champion Mary's cause, our Mother Church's rights and laws. A hero's passion fills our heart, yet gentle as a dove. Arise, all knights who ever graced our alma mater's rolls! Our mission lasts a lifetime as we struggle toward our goals. With heads bowed low we raise on high, this humble prayer, our battle cry: Lord, keep us ever faithful in the work of saving souls!

FIGHT SONG

Rally to the Gold and Green
Upon a crest of Georgia pine is heard a cry of war!
The Paladins are marching forth, just see the spirit soar!
From spur to plume a paragon of grace and gallantry,
Who on the field of tournament unleash ferocity.
We are a band of brothers wielding lance and sword and pike
With disciplined precision in our concentrated strike.
So sound the charge! Our battle line united shield to shield
Will pound opposing armies to the dust and never yield.
All rally to the gold and green! All warriors proud and free!
Our standard is the cross of Christ, the key to victory!

The anthem and fight song are dedicated to Christ's Sacred Heart and the memory of Dr. Brian Tierney, in front of whose memorial it was composed at Pinecrest, August 3, 2005.  Copyright 2006 © Pinecrest Academy, Inc.
